the words (southern fried 2008 recap)
First off, I’m dropping apologies. meaning. i’m striking “i’m sorry” and things-of-the-like from the vocab.
Secondly, I’m redefining what I feel is ‘blog worthy’ these dayz. if i wanna blog about ‘what-da-fkage’ then i will, dammit! — really i’m just trynna get over the hump of not blogging as often as I’d like because i may feel what i have to say that day isn’t worth blogging about. Capeche’?

This year’s southern fried regional poetry slam competition is not only a mouthful to say but is also one of the most prestigiouspoetic events in the nation (thanks NPS!!!!). To say I was honored to be amongst some of the greatest writers of our time is a supreme understatement. To say I was amazed by what I heard and inspired by what I felt would be an accurate statement.
I can’t really recap everything I heard (but that’s usually how it is with slam events that involve so much talent…..you’re doing good to remember a handful of tight one-liners), but I do know this year i was more inspired than I’ve ever been since the FIRST time I went to a regional invitational. HOWEVER…
- the ‘dry heat’ & ’NO breeze for three dayz’ COULD BE assisting with making the weekend “unforgettable”. Soon as we pulled up to the suites the sun just slapped us down like ‘WELCOME TO FLORIDAMUUUUFUUUGGgga!’ — and really..i’ve felt that way about all the states we’ve gone to…
South Carolina (last year’s regionals) So hot i didn’t see ONE native smiling and Austin, TX (nationals) during a heat wave…..nuff said.
but back to inspiration:
THE YOUTH THE YOUTH THE YOUTH. they killed it this year. I’m so glad I watched their slam off. those kids taught me that I’m basically “not doing enough in three minutes”. It’s something I knew, but just needed to be reminded of. kinda like saul hearing anis spit ’shake the dust’.
so since i’ve been back, i’ve written two pieces (actually …finished two that had me stumped for over six months) and they’re my ‘new truth’ right now. see..the GOAL is to be a better poet than i was last month. .better wordsmith.shant-i-say?
we’ll see though.
Here’s some footage of the amazing poetry I was able to here. This is a team piece by ‘Respect The Mic’ from charolette, nc. naturally, they won the competition this year. Black sunshine’s taking it next three years.
yoooooo quote of the month goes to home girl Quineka:
”I decided to drown my problems in alcohol, but turns out they can swim.” Q.M. 2007
